Black History Month Contest

South End Community Center and Stratford Library Teen Services Department announce our annual Black History Month Contest for all Stratford students in grades 6 - 8.

Essays or art must be returned to the Stratford Library Teen Services Department by January 23, 2012.

First, Second and Third Prize winners will be formally announced and prizes awarded at a celebration event on Saturday, February 11, 2012 in The Stratford Library Lovell Room at 11:00 am.

Choose one of the following topics:

Essay 1:

Write an essay about any African American past or present (both famous and not so famous) and why you think that he or she should receive the Nobel Peace Prize.

Essay 2:

Write an essay about any African American past or present (both famous and not so famous) and explain why you would like to grow up to be like that person.

Poem or art 3:

Write a poem or create a drawing about an African American person or a special event in African American history.

Essay 4:

African Americans have been depicted in many wonderful fiction books written by African American authors. Imagine that you are one of the African American characters in the story, how would you relate to the same difficult situation that the character faces and why. All essays must be typed and have a cover page with, name, school, phone number, school, grade and teacher.
