The Nutmeg Book Award encourages children in grades 4-6 to read quality literature and to choose their favorite from a list of ten nominated titles. Jointly sponsored by the Connecticut Library Association (CLA) and the Connecticut Association of School Librarians (CASL), the Nutmeg Committee is comprised of children's librarians, school library media specialists and teachers.
The 2010 Nutmeg Book Award winner is Double Identity by Margaret Peterson Haddix. Over 22,000 children in Connecticut voted this year. The 2011 Nutmeg nominees are available for checkout in the Children’s Department.

The Stratford Library Children’s Department offers a monthly book discussion series for children in grades four to six. Nominated titles from Connecticut’s Nutmeg Book Award for children will be discussed each month. The next discussion will take place on Thursday, January 14 at 5 p.m. We will discuss Double Identity by Margaret Peterson Haddix. In this book, Bethany lives a nightmare when her parents drop her off in an unknown town in the middle of the night, where everyone she meets looks at her as if they just saw a ghost. Children should read the book prior to the discussion. Pizza dinner will be served, and registration is required. Voting for the 2010 Connecticut Nutmeg Book Award will take place in the Stratford Library and across the state during the month of January. The Nutmeg Book Award celebrates quality literature for children in grades four to six (intermediate level) and grades seven and eight (teen level). Children may vote for their favorite book from this year’s lists of nominated titles. The complete list of nominated titles may be found at the Stratford Library or at the Nutmeg website at www.nutmegaward.org. The ballot box will be in the Children’s Department during the month of January, and children may vote any time the Library is open. This year’s winners will be announced on the Nutmeg website on February 14, 2010. The nominees for the 2011 Nutmeg Book Award will be announced February 1, 2010.
